A MOTORIST was left in a critical condition following a head-on collision near Mushroom roundabout on Friday.

A MOTORIST was left in a critical condition following a head-on collision near Mushroom roundabout.

A yellow Suzuki Ignis was reportedly travelling north along the A6123 Herringthorpe Valley Road, towards Mushroom roundabout, at 7.40am on Friday when it collided head-on with a black Ford Transit near the junction with Broadway East, a police spokesperson said.

The Transit van ended up partially embedded in the railings of a pedestrian refuge.

The driver of the Suzuki was taken to hospital with serious injuries and as of Saturday he remained in hospital in a critical condition, a spokesperson said.

"The driver of the Transit suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital for treatment," said the spokesperson.

"Officers are now appealing for witnesses to this collision, which occurred on a busy road at a peak time.

"The team is particularly keen to hear from witnesses who have dashcam footage of the incident, or who saw the Suzuki in the minutes leading up to the collision."
