More postal strike days planned in Royal Mail pay and conditions row

POSTAL workers at Royal Mail will go on strike again next week as they continue their fight over pay and conditions.

Communication Workers’ Union members manned the picket lines on Friday and Saturday and in the latest of a series of walkouts due to “vicious cuts to workers terms and conditions” during the cost of living crisis and high inflation.

The CWU said members had been “degraded” by the pay offers made so far against the backdrop of Royal Mail making profits of £758 million.

The union said it was striking over a pay offer of just two per cent, with inflation at 13 per cent, and changes to working conditions imposed without the agreement of workers.

Wombwell councillor Cllr James Higginbottom joined a picket line at the village’s Royal Mail delivery office in August  to show unity with postal workers and said he was supporting them again.

The councillor said: “It is high time that the Royal Mail Group abandon their pernicious attack on hard-working posties’ terms & conditions and get back around the table to negotiate in good faith.”

Following last weekend’s action, more 24-hour strikes are planned from 4am on:

  •  Thursday, October 13
  •  Thursday, October 20
  •  Tuesday, October 25
  •  Monday, November 28

The industrial action will hit peak mail periods in including Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the build-up to Christmas.

Dave Ward, CWU general secretary, said: “This is a significant announcement, but it is one which matches the level of anger our members feel at the way Royal Mail Group has treated them.

“The CEO of Royal Mail Group, Simon Thompson, is treating postal workers as if they are stupid.

“These are the same people that have kept the country connected and returned Royal Mail Group to record profit.

“Postal workers across the UK now face the fight of their lives to save their jobs and the service they provide to every household and business in the UK.

“We call on everyone to stand with their local postal worker.

“If Royal Mail Group are allowed to get away with this then it sends a green light to every rogue big business in the UK.

“We will not stand by and see the Royal Mail Group become the next P&O but we need your backing to win.”

Royal Mail did not respond to a request for comment.
