More help to get Dearne students into work

YOUNG people in the Dearne Valley are to get more help with finding a job thanks to a new link between Dearne Valley College and JobCentre Plus.

The Job Zone initiative helps Dearne Valley College students to get careers and placements advice.

It was officially opened by MP John Healey.

Business development manager Kaye Jackson said: “It will showcase employment opportunities and apprenticeship vacancies plus information on work experience and volunteering.

“Working closely with JCP we will support individuals to develop their skills to appeal to local employers. The initiative also supports the Get Britain Working Initiative.”

"DVC welcomes 4,000 full and part time students a year, who will also be given extra help with CV writing, interview techniques and job searching.

Mr Healey said: “Compared to the rest of the country, in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham we have twice as many young people who have been out of work for more than a year.

“In parts of the Dearne that number has tripled in the last 12 months.

"So the Jobs Zone will be an important and, I’m sure, well-used service which will give students the best possible chance of finding work after their studies.”

Local employers are also welcome to use the facility to promote their vacancies. Job Zone is open weekdays between 11.30am and 2.30pm.
