Millers contract round-up ... here's the deal on every Rotherham United player

HUNDREDS of professional footballers will face an uncertain future when their contracts expire on June 30 and they leave their clubs.

Players who would normally have offers from other teams will find there are less takers as football adjusts to the financial effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Less money in the sport means fewer deals.

Rotherham United players are largely unaffected, with only goalkeepers Lewis Price and Laurence Bilboe, right-back Billy Jones, winger Julien Lamy and striker Jerry Yates out of contract at the end of next month.

The Advertiser gives a full run-down of the situation at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

GOALKEEPERS:

Dan Iversen: The Leicester City goalkeeper is on a season-long loan and Rotherham have made no secret of the fact they would like to keep him for another year. The Foxes are likely to want to place the young Dane with a Championship club so promotion from League One could swing a deal in the Millers’ favour.

Lewis Price: The 35-year-old back-up keeper is coming to the end of his two-year deal. Manager Paul Warne regards him as a reliable understudy and could offer him fresh terms.

Laurence Bilboe: After four years as a pro, Bilboe, who came through the youth set-up, has yet to make a senior appearance for Rotherham. He’s now 22 and the one-year deal he signed last summer is about to expire.

Matt Olosunde: The American youngster has done well in his first season with the Millers after agreeing a two-year deal when he left Manchester United last summer.

Adam Thompson: Signed a two-year contract when he left crisis club Bury late last August so has another 12 months at New York.

Billy Jones: Jones has played in the Premier League, has shown his class in a Millers shirt and is a good influence on the club’s younger players. However, his age — 33 — and chequered injury record count against him and he may not be offered a new contract when his present one ends in the next few weeks.

CENTRE-HALVES:

Michael Ihiekwe: Rotherham will be glad their stand-out performer this season signed an extension in October last year keeping him at New York until the summer of 2022.

Curtis Tilt: Tilt arrived from Blackpool for around £100,000 on the final day of the January transfer window and signed a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Richard Wood: The old warrior is nearly 35 but the captain is going strong and signed new terms earlier this season that take him to the summer of next year.

Clark Robertson: The Scot has 12 months left on the three-year deal he signed when he joined Rotherham from Blackpool in 2018. His season has been wrecked by injuries but he really impressed in his first year in South Yorkshire.

Jake Cooper: One for the future. The 19-year-old came through the youth ranks and is in his first season as a pro. He’s done well enough to be rewarded with a new contract, signed in March, that ties him to the club until 2022.

Joe Mattock: He turned 30 earlier this month safe in the knowledge that his future should be with Rotherham. He agreed a deal in October that runs until 2022.

Trevor Clarke: The young Irishman signed a three-year contract when he joined the Millers last summer from Shamrock Rovers for a small fee.

MIDFIELDERS:

Matt Crooks: A big man and a big player — one of the best in League One. The Millers have him tied down for another two years.

Ben Wiles: Ask any Rotherham player who their most talented teammate is and they will all say Wiles. A home-grown talent tipped by manager Paul Warne for great things. Has made himself a first-team regular this season and the 20-year-old is due to spend the next two years in a red-and-white shirt.

Jamie Lindsay: Two more years with the Millers for the Scot who was doing great things after his move last summer from Ross County before family issues forced him to drop out of the side.

Shaun MacDonald: Injuries saw him struggle for game-time in his first year with Rotherham after his release last summer by Wigan Athletic. Has another 12 months to put that right.

Dan Barlaser: On a season-long loan from Newcastle United and another player the Millers would love to welcome back to New York. The player says he’d love to play for Rotherham in the Championship next year.

WINGERS:

Chiedozie Ogbene: Another two years left on his contract with an option for a third. That will delight Millers fans who have loved watching the flyer’s fleet-footed impact since he joined from Brentford last summer.

Julien Lamy: His one-year contract is coming to an end. The French 20-year-old has shown pockets of promise in his first year in pro football but it remains to be seen whether it has been enough for the club to activate their 12-month option. Has been on loan at AFC Wimbledon since January.

Hakeeb Adelakun: Due to head back to parent club Bristol City as soon as this season is declared over, having joined the Millers on loan in January.

Josh Koroma: Another January loanee set to return to his parent side, in this case Huddersfield Town.

STRIKERS:

Michael Smith: A key man for Rotherham since joining from Bury in 2017, he is contracted to the club for another two years after agreeing a long extension in October 2018.

Freddie Ladapo: The Millers made him their record signing last summer and the player has responded with 17 goals in the first of the three years he is due to spend in South Yorkshire.

Kyle Vassell: Among the goals this season after a frustrating first year, the former Blackpool man has 12 months left on his deal.

Jamie Proctor: His time at Rotherham has been ruined by injuries and he has spent most of this season on loan at Scunthorpe United and then AFC Fylde. He still has a year left on the extension he signed at the same time as Smith.

Josh Kayode: Another one for the future. The 19-year-old made his Football League bow this season in a loan spell at Carlisle United. Rotherham rate him and gave him a new contract until 2022 before allowing him to head to Brunton Park to speed up his development.

Jerry Yates: Has spent the season impressing on loan at League Two Swindon Town. Out of contract next month but the Millers have an option to extend it by 12 months and will surely exercise that so they can demand a fee for a centre-forward whose stock has risen.
