Michael scales Himalyan Peak for charity

A ROTHERHAM businessman raised more than £2,000 for charity when he climbed 20,000 ft in the Himalayas.

Martin Jeffery (54) climbed Mera Peak in the Himalayas in Nepal back in October and has now presented £2,275 to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Having already been to Everest Base camp, Martin decided to take up this challenge to go higher and take in glacier climbing on ice. The challenge took 21 days to complete.

Martin, a service adviser for Crossroads Truck and Bus at Canklow Meadows, said: “As it was such a challenge I thought I would use the opportunity to help raise money for a charity.

“Having lost so many friends through cancer I chose Macmillan Cancer Support as they help people locally in Rotherham.

“Their work funds nurses and many other services in the area for example the Information and Support Centre in Rotherham General Hospital.”

Martin approached local businesses as well as his family and friends to support his fund-raising efforts.

He added: “I'd like to thank everyone who helped me. I understand times are tough and I'm grateful for the support I've received.”

Amy Hebdon, Macmillan fund-raising manager for Rotherham, said that the charity could not carry out its work without people like Martin.

She said: “This year in Rotherham we need to raise more than £250,000 to help fund new posts and support existing services.

“We desperately need people like Martin to help raise vital funds as Macmillan relies on voluntary donations for 99 per cent of its income.
