Michael Ihiekwe puts own goal behind him and the latest on Freddie Ladapo as Rotherham United go for a last-day League One promotion

BOSS Paul Warne is backing Michael Ihiekwe to overcome his own-goal agony as Rotherham United bid to secure automatic promotion to the Championship this Saturday.

After scoring the opening goal, the centre-half sent a spectacular diving header past his own goalkeeper at Sunderland on Tuesday when the Millers were leading 1-0 and only minutes away from virtually guaranteeing their place in the second tier.

But Warne is confident the defender, who was named in the EFL League One Team of the Year earlier this month, will suffer no after-effects in this weekend's last-day clash at Gillingham where Rotherham are looking to finally seal the deal.

"Icky is fine," the boss said this morning. "Without Icky we wouldn't be in the top six this year.

"Random things like his own goal happen in football all the time. We should have stopped the cross before it came in.

"Icky is a big boy. He understands it was just a moment in time and one that he has to forget. Hopefully he can have a moment in time on Saturday that gets us up."

After their 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light, the second-paved Millers know that victory over the Gills would guarantee them promotion. They could draw or even lose and still climb a division as long as they match the result of MK Dons' at play-off-chasing Plymouth Argyle.

If Rotherham win and leaders Wigan Athletic come unstuck at Shrewsbury Town they will finish as champions.

Wantaway striker Freddie Ladapo has been banished from the matchday 18 for the last two games after a run of poor performances and there is little sign of him returning to the fold.

"I can't see me making a massive change to the squad but everything is under consideration," Warne said.

"It is Thursday morning. We will see how everyone trains today and tomorrow before we leave. I will have a look at the lads and come up with a decision which I think suits everyone."

The 29-year-old, who submitted a transfer request in January and is still determined to leave, wasn't at AESSEAL New York Stadium for last Saturday's 2-1 triumph over Oxford United and neither was he spotted at Sunderland.

The 15-goal hitman is almost certain to miss out and Warne hasn't decided yet whether to invite him to travel on the team bus. If no invitation is forthcoming, there is nothing to prevent the player making his own way to Kent if he wants to cheer on his teammates

"I don't know if I am going to take the lads who are not in the 18 or not, although I feel like they have all played a massive part," the manager said. "Ideally I would take everyone. It's a bit of a tight squeeze on the bus.

"I don't force lads to attend games. That is not how I run the ship. If I don't include Freddie in the squad, it's his choice whether he comes to support us. It's completely up to him and I have no issue whatever he chooses to do.

"Griggy (injured loan centre-forward Grigg) turned up at Sunderland of his own volition the other night. Freddie might have been there the other night, but if he was I didn't see him."

Around 2,000 Millers fans are making the trip and the number would have been considerably higher had more coach travel been available.

The club looked into putting on extra buses but the lack of available drivers on a bank-holiday weekend scuppered their plan.
