They then threw the plants at each other creating a disturbance and leaving the streets untidy.

The CCTV footage assisted in identifying the group and after interviews were conducted by the police one of them was charged with criminal damage and four others young were given official police warnings and referred to the youth offending service.

It was agreed with their parents that they should undertake some work within the community to pay back the damage they had caused.

Organised by the Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team, on Friday 30 October, during the half term break, the youngsters paid back to the community for their antisocial behaviour by undertaking litter picking duties in the town centre over a three- hour period.

Twenty bags of litter were collected as a result of the operation and it was warmly welcomed by members of the public who said they were pleased to see the young people returning something to the community and that action had been taken.

Sergeant Andy Clarke, of Mexborough Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: "We need to make people aware that this behaviour will not be tolerated and action will be taken against them. We are aware of the issues in the area and we will strive to ensure we handle them efficiently and effectively to meet the needs of the community."

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, Regulatory, Customer Services and Housing said: "I am very pleased that this action was taken to show young people that this kind of behaviour will not be tolerated. We will continue to work with communities to ensure that antisocial behaviour is dealt with effectively."
