A POLICE officer from Mexborough has been praised for helping two hot doggies who were accidentally locked in a car.

PC Haddon Smith came across an upset dog owner on Common Lane, Bolton upon Dearne, whilse patrol ing during a hot afternoon last Tuesday (August 27). The woman had become upset after locking her keys and her two beloved English Pointers, Nessa and Merlin in the car.

The woman, who asked not to be named, had already tried to break the windows with rocks and was beginning to lose hope when PC Smith passed and offered to help.

Using a life-saver hammer, the PC managed to smash a front window and use his baton to clear the glass, before climbing into the car to help get the dogs out, along with their owner and the help of another passing dog walker.

The dogs were fine and PC Smith stayed to chat to the woman, to make sure she was OK and to calm her down.

Later in the week, the woman sent PC Smith a thank you message and some pictures of her pooches, happy at home.

She said in her message: “I wanted to say a huge thank you to one of your officers who quite literally saved the life of my two dogs today.

“PC Smith, based out of Mexborough, was a complete superhero! I am so grateful to still have my dogs alive and well. Thank you again to PC Smith.”

PC Smith said he was happy to have been able to help the woman and her dogs when she needed it.

"It was a very hot day and she was very distraught at the time, worrying about her dogs overheating. They were really nice dogs and I stayed to have a chat with her after," PC Smith added.
