Mexborough medical site goes under the hammer

THE site of a former nurses’ home in Mexborough will go under the hammer next week with a guide price of £225,000.

From 1934 until 2011, the three-quarter-acre site on Cemetery Road was the location of state-of-the-art purpose-built accommodation for the nurses working at Montagu Hospital.

The building included 30 bedrooms as well as a recreation room, lecture room and modern kitchens.

More recently, it was used as a car park for hospital staff but the NHS caused controversy — and concerns about parking on surrounding roads — when it hiked up staff parking fees in 2016.

Two years ago, the site was put up for auction but did not make its reserve price.

Doncaster Council granted planning permission for nine homes on the site in February 2016.

It will feature in the next property auction by auctioneers Pugh in Leeds next Tuesday, July 17.

Paul Thompson, managing director of Pugh auction house, said: “This is a site with great potential for development.

“It’s in an excellent location, close to the hospital and Mexborough town centre as well as being just a stone's throw from the A1(M) and M18 motorways, so really well connected to the rest of Yorkshire.

“We are already seeing a great deal of interest from developers and investors in this and several other community sites and buildings that are due to go under the hammer in our next auction.”
