Mexborough-based Aurora Wellbeing received the windfall from the Masonic Charitable Foundation one of Britain’s largest charity grant-givers.

It won a public vote to scoop the maximum amount on offer, a share of £3 million handed out nationwide.

Every month, Aurora offers around 40 cancer patients and carers free hair care, manicures, pedicures, facial treatments, massages and more.

Aurora volunteer Barbara Lord (70), of Swinton, submitted the application for a slice of the funding pie.

She said: “A grant of £4,000 would have been amazing. I never thought a charity as small as ours would win the maximum amount.

“We never planned what we would do with this much money. We will have to sit down and work that out.

“But I will insist that the building gets redecorated with new carpets throughout, as its overdue that.

“Hopefully we can extend the services that we offer people, too.”
