TWO men were spotted beating a swan to death with a stick on the River Don canal path in Mexborough yesterday (Sunday).

Police were called to the scene at about 1.45pm by a member of the public who had seen the two men killing the swan, a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Police said.

The two men are believed to have left the scene and headed towards the George and Dragon pub further up the canal path, the spokeswoman added.

Police have launched an investigation and anyone with information should call 101, quoting reference number 14/155254/19.
