Mayor quits over BNP influx into English Democrats

Peter Davies, who has been Mayor of Doncaster since 2009, blames an influx of new members from the far-right British National Party, for his resignation.

But English Democrats party chairman Robin Tilbrook said: “Peter’s conduct, while disappointing for us, is also a betrayal of the 25,344 English Democrat voters in Doncaster that elected him in the first place.

“While it is true that a few former members of the British National Party have joined the English Democrats, this is a fact that is also true of other parties.”

A referendum in Doncaster last year, saw residents vote to keep the current system of elected mayors which was introduced in 2001.

Mr Davies, who was elected in 2009, will continue in his post as an independent until the next Mayoral election in May.
