Mayor backs Rotherham Hospital's baking bonanza

THE MAYOR of Rotherham has made his hospital fundraising debut in support of his chosen charities.

Cllr Alan Buckley attended the bake sale at Rotherham Hospital where patients, their families and staff shared cakes, took part in competitions and won raffle prizes.

Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Dr Ted appeal is one of the Mayor’s three causes, chosen when Cllr Buckley took office in April.

The event raised £439.24, to be split three ways between Dr Ted, the Fire Fighters’ Charity and Headway Rotherham.

Cllr Buckley was joined on his visit by the Mayoress of Rotherham, Mrs Sandra Buckley.

He said: “Being Mayor has so many highlights, but the Mayoress and I are particularly enjoying supporting our chosen charities and good causes.

“We were delighted to be invited to the Dr Ted fundraiser — it was good fun encouraging people to treat themselves to some delicious cakes.

“It’s wonderful to know that a portion of the money Sandra and I helped the charity to raise will be spent on resources and equipment which will make youngsters smile during their stay in hospital.”

Top raffle prizes were provided by Jump INCflated, Nando’s, Wacky Warehouse and Toby Carvery.

Dr Ted’s appeal raises money for toys and specialist medical equipment to help ensure that young patients have the best hospital experience possible.

The appeal has raised £77,500 since it was set up in April 2012, buying games and sensory toys, child-friendly wheelchairs and more.

Barry Mellor, chair of the charitable funds committee, said: “Thanks to everyone who baked treats, bought raffle tickets or entered competitions at the Dr Ted fundraiser.

“We were especially proud to see the Mayor and Mayoress volunteer their time to help us raise such a fantastic amount.”
