Goals from Hakeem Odoffin, Dan Barlaser and young Ciaran McGukin sealed a 3-0 victory at the EnviroVent Stadium to back up the earlier pre-season successes against Parkgate and Fleetwood Town.

And while Warne says he still needs five or six players to complete his playing group ready for the the Championship season, those at his disposal continue to perform well for him.

Rotherham started the brighter against their League Two opponents, with Georgie Kelly directing a header just wide and Conor Washington forcing a good save from Mark Oxley, the stopper who started his pro career at Rotherham more than a decade ago.

Then the Millers took control with two quick early goals.

Odoffin’s glancing header from Barlaser’s corner had them in front on nine minutes before the provider turned scorer, meeting Washington’s pull-back with a sweet, low finish to make it 2-0.

More than 300 fans made the journey up the A1 to watch the action on a balmy summer’s evening and were able to witness a controlled opening 45 minutes from their team.

Kelly was a strong forward focal point alongside Washington and Rotherham could have added to their advantage before half time, with summer arrival Cohen Bramall and Ollie Rathbone going close.

Harrogate, who included recently departed Miller Joe Mattock in their line-up, were kept well in check until George Thomson’s curling free-kick forced a flying save from Viktor Johansson just before the break.

New signing Cameron Humphreys, Ben Wiles, Richard Wood and Joshua Kayode were introduced at the start of the second half but Harrogate should have pulled a goal back immediately, only for Johannson to excel again with a smart, near post stop from Luke Armstrong.

The trialist in the Millers ranks was later confirmed as Dutch defender Nigel Lonwijk, from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He had a decent game and his powerful header had the home defence scrambling.

The management team kept their promise to give plenty of players a run by sending on Chiedozie Ogbene and youngsters Curtis Durose, McGukin, Jake Hull, Hamish Douglas and Mackenzie Warne as the half progressed.

Kayode was a yard away from making it 3-0 but Harrogate, strengthened by multiple changes, had a hot spell before the outcome was put beyond doubt.

Rotherham worked a position close in and substitute McGukin’s close-range shot had just enough power to beat Oxley’s attempt to block.
