'Managed motorway' congestion-busting plan for M1

VIEWS are being sought on plans to use variable speed limits to ease congestion on the M1.

The proposed managed motorway system between junctions 32 and 35a is cheaper than traditional road widening.

It would also cover slip roads and links to the M18 and A616. Work is planned to begin before the end of March.

A Highways Agency spokesman said: “We are keen to have comments on the draft regulations for providing variable mandatory speed limits for the scheme.”

Executive director Andrew Denniff, from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “We welcome any proposal which will reduce traffic congestion.

“This stretch of motorway is a key route for business people and the public travelling between Barnsley and Rotherham and beyond.”
