"Crews attended a fire in a first-floor flat, but the occupier was not there at the time of the incident," said a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue.

"The fire was contained to the premises, but an adult male from a nearby flat was rescued by our crews and treated for smoke inhalation."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, she added.
