It is believed the Land Rover collided with Mr Westerman near the junction with Park Drive, she added.

“Despite the best efforts of a member of the public to save him, the 75-year-old pedestrian sadly died at the scene,” said the spokeswoman.

“Mr Westerman’s family has asked for privacy at what is an extremely difficult time and have urged members of the public to contact our officers with any information.”

Floral tributes have been left at the scene of the crash.

The 29-year-old man who was driving the Land Rover was detained by police under suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving over the prescribed limit of alcohol. He has been released on bail.
