Man held over Rotherham gun hold-up bid

POLICE investigating an armed robbery at a newsagent’s shop in Treeton have arrested a suspect.

The 29-year-old has been bailed pending further inquiries after officers questioned him about a raid at Treeton News on Front Street.

A man armed with a gun and wearing a balaclava demanded cash and cigarettes. When the shop assistant handed over some cigarettes the robber insisted she swap them for a different brand.

The raid happened shortly after 7pm when one woman was working. A female customer on her way out chased him away.

The newsagent’s was also held up in January last year when owner Jackie McMahon was confronted by three masked raiders brandishing crowbars.

Cash and cigarettes were stolen, and a customer was struck over the head by one of the offenders.
