Man dies in Mexborough house fire

A MAN in his 60s died after a fire in Mexborough.

Fire crews from Adwick, Edlington and Dearne attended Chaucer Road shortly before 7.30pm yesterday (Wednesday), spending nearly five hours at the scene.

A police spokeswoman said: “It is reported that a fire which started in a back garden spread to neighbouring houses, requiring a small number of homes to be evacuated for a short time.

“A 62-year-old man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. There were no further reported injuries.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting incident 700 of January 13.

South Yorkshire Police said it will make a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to contact with the man before his death.
