Man cleared of rape due to lack of evidence

A MAN has been cleared of rape after his trial collapsed due to insufficient evidence.

Allan Hunter (49), formerly of Shelley Drive, Herringthorpe, was due to stand trial at Sheffield Crown Court today (Tuesday) accused of two counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault.

Hunter, now of Walkworth Crescent, Newcastle, had been accused of committing the offences in Rotherham in July last year.

The trial was stopped on the basis of insufficient evidence and Hunter was found not guilty on all counts, a court spokesman said.
