Man charged following hammer attack in Rotherham

A 24-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court after a man was reportedly attacked with a hammer in Rotherham.

John Carney, of Rosehill Avenue, Rawmarsh, was charged with section 18 wounding with intent and appeared before Sheffield Magistrates’ Court on Friday.

Police were called to McColls in Thomas Street, in Swinton, at 12.44pm last Wednesday, following reports that a man had been attacked with a weapon.

The 22-year-old victim was taken to hospital after the attack and was still there today, a police spokesperson said, adding that his injuries were "not thought to be life-threatening".

Carney, who was arrested and charged on Thursday, was remanded into custody to appear before Sheffield Crown Court on March 11.
