Man charged after Rotherham police officer seriously assaulted

A 22-YEAR-old man is due to appear before court today, accused of seriously assaulting a police officer in the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday).

It was reported that shortly before 3.30am, the response officer was on duty in Rotherham carrying out enquiries into suspicious behaviour on Bawtry Road.

He was attacked and suffered injuries to his head and chest, said a police spokeswoman. 

"The officer was taken to hospital for tests and has since been discharged," she added. 

"Samuel Barnett, of Garden Close, Broom, has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm, assaulting an emergency services worker, criminal damage, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and possession of a Class B drug.

"He is currently in police custody."

Barnett is the second person to appear in court in connection with assaulting a Rotherham police officer this week.

Nicole Walsh appeared before Magistrates yesterday, facing assault and criminal damage charges after police were called to a suspected assault in Eastwood, in the early hours of Tuesday morning (May 19). 

"Walsh is charged with assault, assaulting an emergency services worker and criminal damage," added the spokeswoman. 

The 28-year-old, of St Leonard’s Lane, has been remanded in custody.
