A 30-year-old man has been arrested over a Boxing Day attack which jeopardised a top Rotherham snooker player’s career.

Former Rotherham Open champion Tony Scott was told he might never regain full sight after being struck from behind in a Rawmarsh takeaway.

The 31-year-old, who plays for Central Snooker Club, is determined to keep playing despite doctors' warnings that his eyesight may not fully recover.

A police spokeswoman said that a man had been arrested in connection with the incident, which happened at about 9pm on December 26, 2009. He was bailed pending further enquiries.

She added: “We are interested in speaking to anyone who was in the Dale Road area of Rawmarsh who may have seen anything at the time.

“In particular, there was a woman who ran into a taxi office nearby who may have seen the incident.”
