Man arrested after patient dies at hospital following assault

Police arrested a 47-year-old man after officers were called by a member of hospital staff on Saturday evening when the fight broke out between the two patients. 

A spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said they had been called at 8.54pm by a staff member "reporting that two patients had been fighting"

One of those involved a 48-year-old man, died of his injuries in the early hours yesterday morning, they said, adding that a 47-year-old man been arrested on suspicion of murder.

The victim has not yet been named but police said his family had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers.

“We are working closely with the hospital and will remain on scene this evening as we conduct enquiries," said the spokesperson.
