A MAN was allegedly critically ill in hospital after an early hours assault near a Canklow park.

The walker was reportedly attacked at an entrance to Canklow Recreation Ground, Canklow Road, at around 12.15am on Saturday.

The assault was reported on Facebook page Brinsworth News, where the victim was named as Dennis Richmond and a police spokesman was quoted as saying that the victim was in a “critical condition”.

Facebook user Joanne Brookes posted: “Let’s hope he pulls through. I’m thinking of his family.

“[He] wouldn’t hurt a fly, this bloke.”

A Yorkshire Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed this morning that staff had attended, saying a man in his 40s was taken to Rotherham Hospital with "suspected head injuries".

The Advertiser has asked South Yorkshire Police to provide further details about the incident.
