Five fire crews — from Edlington, Parkway, Maltby, Rivelin and Aston Park stations — were called out at 7.35pm on Saturday.

The blaze — in a disused part of the Braithwell Road school — is thought to have been started deliberately, South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue said.

The crews were at the scene until almost midnight.

The academy tweeted yesterday: “Unfortunately there was a fire yesterday evening in a section of the old building which is unused by students.

“No other area of the academy was affected, therefore we will be fully open, as normal tomorrow. Thank you to SYFR for extinguishing the fire safely.”
