Yorkshire Magneteers spokesperson Kerry Carter said there had been three members fishing at the time — a smaller group than usual because of the pandemic restrictions — and no children had been present.

The hobby involves hunting for metal under the surface of canals and rivers and has risen in popularity through video coverage on the likes of YouTube.

A police spokeswoman said: “Officers received a call at 10.26am yesterday with reports that a body had been found in the River Don in Masbrough, close to Armer Street.

“Officers attended and recovered the body of a 49-year-old man.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious at this time and a file has been prepared for the coroner.”
