Traffic chaos ensued over the weekend after a man pulled onto the hard shoulder of a motorway and stepped out into the path of the oncoming traffic.

The M18 was closed for eight hours following the incident on Saturday morning.

Police said that the 42-year-old man had been struck by a green Skania HGV and a black Toyota people carrier after stepping into the southbound carriageway of the M18, around half a mile from its junction with the M1, shortly before 7am.

Emergency crews who attended the scene pronounced the man dead, as a result of multiple injuries, at 7.15am.

Tailbacks of several miles developed after crash investigation officers closed the stretch of motorway.

The M18 was eventually re-opened around eight hours later at 3.20pm.

The man who died in the incident has not yet been named but is believed to be from the Nottinghamshire area.

Witnesses are being urged to contact South Yorkshire Police's Accident Witness Helpline on 0114 220 2970.
