'Lucky escape' for sleepy smoker who set settee on fire

A 30-year-old woman had a “lucky escape” after waking to find the settee she was lying on ablaze.

The woman was taken to hospital for a check-up but escaped the blaze in her ground floor flat on West Park Drive, Swallownest, without serious injury.

Firefighters attended the fire at around 4.30am this morning to put put the blaze, which had been started by a cigarette.

A fire service spokesman said: “It appears she woke up to find the settee she was laid on had been set on fire by a cigarette she has been smoking.

“It was easily extinguished once the crew arrived at the scene, but it was clear that she had had a very lucky escape.”
