Loud bangs from steelworks heard across Rotherham
Liberty Steel

LOUD noises heard across Rotherham last night (Wednesday) were part of normal processes at Liberty Steel, police said.

Reports said water mixing with molten steel had caused “mini sonic booms” at about 10.30pm.

Twitter users said the three bangs could be heard as far away as Mexborough, while others closer to the Aldwarke plant described windows rattling in their homes.

South Yorkshire Police said: “We have received reports of loud bangs heard throughout the Rotherham area.

“We can confirm that the source has been identified and there is no cause for alarm. The mixing processes at an industrial premises caused the noises.”
