Lively debate on police helicopter's future

PUBLIC support for South Yorkshire’s police helicopter continues to grow as the Police Authority goes online to discuss the issues surrounding its proposed axing.

More than 50 people took part in an online web chat with the authority to discuss the introduction of a National Police Air Support, which will replace the existing helicopter based in Sheffield.

Approximately 100 questions and comments were received and the authority also reported dramatically increased traffic through its online Twitter account and website.

Charles Perryman, chairman of South Yorkshire Police Authority, described the live debate as “an overwhelming success.”

He added: “The issue of NPAS has generated huge interest amongst members of the public and as an Authority we need to listen to those views."

A second webchat takes place tomorrow and the authority will discuss the findings of consultation at a meeting in Barnsley on Friday.
