David Simpson was the star of the show at Listerdale Junior Academy in his unique Yuletide tailoring, which featured a bright red jacket adorned with reindeer, complete with a matching tie.

The school’s staff and pupils formed a cavalcade of Christmas finery in their brightly coloured knitwear, having each made a £1 donation.

The money raised on the day, which totalled £170, will later be donated to Save The Children, long before the sight of Mr Simpson in his startling Christmas suit fades from the youngsters' memories.

He said: “I’d worn the jacket and tie for a number of days and got a big cheer when I walked into the dining hall, but it came into its own on Christmas jumper day, when everyone joined me in wearing something festive.

“The suit started as a dare from my staff.

“They reckon I'm a bit ‘Bah humbug’ when it comes to Christmas so they bought it for me and I agreed to wear it.

“It put me into the Christmas spirit, actually, and it was great to see everyone else wearing their jumpers and raising so much for what is a great charity.”
