Limit of 50mph in weeks after petition over road safety fears

A LOWERED speed limit of 50mph is expected to be in place on Cumwell Lane in August, Rotherham Council says.

A petition of 622 names was presented to RMBC in May, calling for more safety measures on the road between Hellaby and Thurcroft.

It followed two deaths in as many months in the winter and the council agreed to make changes.

New road markings and signs have already been brought in, and vegetation cut back to help visibility.

A report to cabinet on Monday said the lower speed limit should be implemented in June.

Average speed cameras have also been called for in order to enforce the 50mph limit.

This idea has been backed but will take longer to implement, members were told this week.
