The 35-year-old, who has spent most of his career in the Championship and Premier League, has joined the Millers two days before second-tier opening day on a one-year deal.

He had been a free agent after leaving Middlesbrough at the end of last season and will need time to get up to speed.

Warne says the player, whose other clubs include Cardiff City and Leeds Uited, can play as a centre-half or wing-back on either flank.

The boss was a teammate of Peltier at Yeovil Town 15 years ago.

"I played with him and I always thought as a manager that if I could ever sign him then I would," Warne said.

"I know exactly what he's like - I've seen him in the dressing room, in the tunnel, on the pitch. I've seen him in the worst moments when the team are losing and hes' a leader, a fighter, a scrapper, a very good footballer."
