Solicitor Hester Russell, who is more comfortable in the criminal courts, changed her work clothes for her trainers to run her very first half marathon. She said: “This has been a fantastic challenge for me as it is the furthest I have ever run but I have really enjoyed it and I am tremendously proud to have the chance to raise money for this fantastic charity.”

Jill Gascoigne, who took part in the fun run, added : “A lot of our friends and colleagues are married to or have boyfriends in the forces and it's very important to support out troops any way that we can.”

The intrepid runners chose to support St Dunstan's as Sandra Hedley is running London Marathon for them next April and aims to raise £5,000 for the charity.

She added: “Before this event I had raised nearly £1,000 but there is still a lot of hard work to do.”
