FIREFIGHTERS helped a person escape from their home via a window after arsonists started a blaze outside of their Rawmarsh property.

Crews from Dearne, Rotherham and Edlington stations were called to Oates Avenue at 4.25am on Saturday where a wheelie bin against a wall had been deliberately set alight, a spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

One person was rescued from a window using a ladder, she added.

Firefighters used hose reels to put out the fire and were at the scene until 5.30am.
