Kind gesture of cancer survivor

A CANCER survivor’s decision to celebrate her 80th birthday by collecting for charity proved a money-spinner for two good causes.

Hazel Hubbard (above) beat cancer once, so she knows what it takes to fight the fatal disease.

And when she had her 80th birthday coming up, she wanted to do something special for those less fortunate — asking for cash donations instead of gifts.

Hazel, of Brecks, said: “I wanted to have a big party for my 80th birthday with all my friends and family.

“I told them I did not want any presents. I’ve got everything that I need.

“The message was to just come and enjoy the party — and if they wanted to give me anything, I’d like to donate to charities.”

Weston Park Hospital, where Hazel was treated for cancer, will receive half of the £620 she collected, while the rest of the money will go to Cancer Research UK.
