Ryan Scott (22) had been due to spend three days behind bars after his sentencing for stalking his ex-girlfriend was delayed on November 5 due to comments he had made to the probation service.

But he ended up staying locked up at Doncaster Prison for seven days due to flooding in the area because he could not be transported to court.

Scott, who has 21 convictions for 30 previous offences which largely involved dishonesty, was deemed “very immature” by a probation officer who said he had accepted “little responsibility”.

Ms Rebecca Tanner, mitigating at Sheffield Crown Court last Monday, said Scott, of Aubrey Senior Way, Kimberworth, had found being in custody a “difficult experience” and now appreciated his liberty.

Scott admitted stalking his former partner, with whom he had begun an eight-month relationship in August last year, at a hearing on October 30.

Prosecutor Ms Beverley Wright said four months after the relationship had ended and the victim had moved away, Scott had found out where she lived and turned up at her new Rotherham address uninvited.

“She was asleep in bed and woke to find the defendant sat on top of her,” said Ms Wright.

Ms Wright said the complainant had been scared and told Scott to “get out” and told the court he had been “shouting nasty things at her”.

There was a struggle which moved out on to the street where the complainant’s mother tried to calm the situation, the prosecutor said.

Days later, the victim received threatening phone calls and messages from Scott.

Ms Wright said: “The incident has caused quite a lot of stress for her.

“She’s concerned about her children because on the first visit when he turned up uninvited at her address, her children were there.”

Sentencing Scott, Judge Jeremy Richardson said: “You have expressed a number of very poor attitudes towards women and the probation officer, in a moment of great insight, found there was a serious risk of reoffending unless something is done to reform you.”

The judge said that despite the fact that Scott had not previously complied with court orders, there was a “real prospect of rehabilitation” in order for him to have a “better attitude towards women”.

He added: “You have had a taste of custody in the last few days — slightly longer than anticipated — while you were on remand.”

The judge warned the labourer that if he did not start respecting women then he would lead a very lonely life.

He sentenced him to four months in prison suspended for 12 months and handed him a two-month curfew order, five-year restraining order and a 28-day supervision order,

Scott was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.

“You need to grow up and start behaving like a man instead of some ridiculous juvenile,” the judge said.

“Start respecting women, start respecting people — never mind just women — and have a little bit of self-respect.”
