ADVENTURE-loving granddad Jim Beachill drew up a list of “things to do before I die” when he hit 65–and walking Hadrian’s wall came out top.

When grandchildren Jack (12) and ten-year-old Elishia heard of his plans, they begged to be taken along.

Now the intrepid trio, who braved thunder storms and being chased by angry cattle during their six day 80 mile walk, have raised £6,000 in sponsorship for Weston Park Hospital cancer charity.

Jim’s long time friend, Conisbrough born singing star Tony Christie handed over the cheque and went on to meet patients and sign autographs before agreeing to become a patron of the hospital.

Jim, from Conisbrough, a management accountant and secretary of the South Yorkshire Cricket League said: “When I reached 65 I decided to draw up a list of things to do before I die, and walking Hadrian’s Wall was one of them.

“When the grand kids heard, they asked if they could come along, so we did it together. It was quite an adventure and we got soaked to the skin in lightening storms as well as being chased by cattle.

“But I was delighted with the sponsorship which helped us raise money for a worthy cause, and Tony, who I have known for many years, agreed to join us for the cheque presentation.”

A spokeswoman for the hospital charity said: “The hospital was buzzing with excitement. We were delighted with the efforts of Jim, Jack and Elishia and the visit of Tony.”

Added Jim: “Tony and I worked together 50 years ago and became good friends.

“I contacted him to see if he would help us close our adventure with a bang and he readily agreed and he devoted the day to us.

“After touring the wards and meeting the patients Tony was visibly moved and I am thrilled that he has agreed to become a patron of the charity.”

Now Jim is turning his attention to other goals on his things to do list....including driving across America and walking the Great Wall of China.
