Jailed addict banned from visiting parents’ house

A MAN struggling with a drug and alcohol addiction damaged his father’s garage because he refused to give him money.

Wayne Dawson (38), of Roman Crescent, Brinsworth, was jailed for eight months at Sheffield Crown Court on August 14.

He visited his parents’ home in December to ask his father for money, Ms Laura Marshall, prosecuting, told the court.

“The complainants say in their statements that they have been having difficulty with the defendant for some time,” Ms Marshall told the court.

“It’s clear that he has a dependency on alcohol and drugs and it’s clear that he attended his parents’ house for money.”

After they refused, Dawson went to the garage and used a hammer to put two holes in the wall.

He went home and returned to the house later with a chisel, Ms Marshall told the court.

Dawson admitted charges of criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon at an earlier hearing.

“It’s safe to say that they (the parents) are at the end of their tether,” Ms Marshall told the court.

She said what his parents wanted more than anything was for him to get help.

In a separate incident, on January 2, Dawson punched a bartender who asked him to leave the County pub on Bridgegate, Rotherham.

He admitted a charge of assault at a previous hearing.

Mr James Baird, mitigating, said Dawson’s father had been visiting him in prison to discuss what had happened.

Dawson was jailed for eight months and was given a two-year restraining order which will prevent him from visiting his parents’ house.

However, he will be allowed to contact them and see them away from their home.

Sentencing, Judge Roger Thomas said: “You’re 38 now, and your life is going really rather wrong.

“You have been before the courts a few times for offences that cause me concern, you have misused alcohol badly and you have some mental health issues.

“It’s not as if (your parents) were unwilling to help and support you but they certainly didn’t have to give you money because of the fear from your father that that might only put alcohol down your throat.

“You caused some damage to his garage, damage of £100 or so, by putting holes in the wall.”

Judge Thomas said Dawson had committed the assault for “no reason whatsoever”.
