Jail for attacks on partner and prison staff

A “THREATENING and abusive” man who assaulted three prison officers at court while appearing on domestic abuse charges has been jailed for three-and-a-half years.

Nathan Newey, of West Avenue, Rawmarsh, attacked three officers shortly after a hearing at Sheffield Crown Court where he was being prosecuted for assaulting his partner.

The 31-year-old had taken objection to the fact he hadn’t been sentenced at his hearing in June.

Ms Katy Rafter, prosecuting, told the court on October 22: “On the day of the outstanding sentence for the assault against this defendant’s partner, the defendant took objection to the way in which the case was being dealt with in that he wasn’t sentenced immediately.

“It’s alleged that he assaulted three separate prison officers in the process of being taken back down to the cells.”

Newey's barrister refused to represent him on Monday due to his abusive behaviour.

Before Newey was called up from the cells, Ms Laura Marshall told Judge Jeremy Richardson: “In the absence of the defendant, I would like to make an application to come off the record.

“He (Newey) has been extremely abusive and threatening to my instructing solicitor and myself.”

Judge Richardson granted the application and Newey chose to represent himself.

He admitted one count of common assault and two counts of assault by beating and was told to head back to the cells and write his own mitigation using a pencil and paper.

Newey was jailed for a total of three-and-a-half years for the assault on prison officers and the assault on his partner.

He previously admitted a section 20 assault on his partner in connection with an incident in December.
