Independent candidates look to the future

INDEPENDENT election candidates and their supporters are meeting next week to plan their future—and are encouraging anyone interested in shaking up local politics to join them

The local elections last month saw 15 independent candidates standing in Rotherham, while independent borough councillor Peter Thirlwall stood against Rotherham MP Denis MacShane in the general election.

The independents are keen to maintain the momentum they gathered during  the campaign, starting with a meeting at Bramley Parish Hall from 6.45pm to 8.30pm next Tuesday.

A message on the Rotherham Independents website says: “We are a friendly bunch that believe politics should be fun too and we would like to extend an invitation to all who may be interested in our unique inclusive and collaborative approach to improve things for us all in Rotherham.

“We are not a political party, in any traditional sense, in fact we are the antidote to them. Take a look at us you will be pleasantly surprised at what you find.

“You are welcome to join us and help to bring about the improvements to the way we are governed locally, that most yearn for, but don't know how to achieve, until now.”
