Imperial Buildings sold in £4 million Rotherham town centre property deal

THREE major town centre buildings have changed hands in a £4 million deal after the company charged with leading Rotherham’s ill-fated Renaissance scheme bowed out.

Iliad, which built two glass-fronted developments on the Keppel Wharf and Old Market sites off Market Street and Corporation Street respectively, has sold both buildings to Leeds-based Modernistiq Developments.

Also included in the deal of the package known as “Rotherham Central” is the historic Imperial Buildings, which was renovated as part of Rotherham Borough Council’s Westgate Demonstrator Project but has seen a series of shop closures in the past year.

Estate agent GVA oversaw the sale, which it said included 61 apartments and 23 retail units across the three buildings.

After Iliad was appointed by the council as its key development partner in 2005, the Liverpool-based firm masterminded the construction of a towering block on the east bank of the River Don, which is mainly taken up by apartments, and the Old Market development fronting Corporation Street, which is occupied on the ground floor by bridal firm Wed2Be.

Steve Wright, owner of Modernistiq, has applied to turn the vacant ground floor mezzanine and river deck levels of Keppel Wharf into 13 extra apartments.

The borough council has been contacted for comment.
