'I'll carry on,' vows disgraced dentist

ROGUE Rotherham dentist Dr Mohammed Siddiqui has vowed to carry on working despite being found guilty of "extremely serious breaches" of standards.

Dr Siddiqui, a former Dalton Dental Care practitioner, was ordered by the General Dental council's professional conduct committee to observe 21 stringent conditions to continue practising in the UK.

The committee heard that the dentist had taken on vast amounts of work for financial gain.

Among the accusations against him were allegations that he had:

  • Reused single use implements.
  • Failed to ensure that instruments were clean.
  • Permitted his decontamination room to be used as a kitchen.
  • Risked “frying” patients’ teeth by using his dentists’ drill without the water required to cool the treated area.

But he insisted this week: “I will continue to work as a dentist.

“I actually have a job offer on the table. I have learnt a lot.”

Dr Siddiqui managed to find work at a practice in Lampeter, Wales, between January and April this year despite 17 conditions already imposed by the GDC to ensure that he no longer worked unsupervised.

But supervising dentist Patricia Young expressed concern about his inappropriate treatments, ongoing use of the air drill without water and his treatment of staff.

He must now observe a more stringent set of 21 guidelines for the next three years.

A spokesman for the GDC’s professional conduct committee told Dr Siddiqui that he had knowingly provided “ad hoc” treatment for his patients as he aimed to maximise his income.

He added: “You regularly saw as many as 45 or 50 patients in a day, too often treating the symptoms but not the causes of their problems.

“The Committee finds that this conduct was particularly reprehensible because you were well aware of what constituted proper treatment.

“You deliberately pursued this practice in order to maximise your very high income, until you were stopped in May 2009.”
