A police spokesman said that one of the men started shouting abuse as they approached the road's junction with Doncaster Road and became increasingly aggressive before punching the victim in the face.

The blow knocked the 61-year-old man onto the floor.

The police spokesman added: "The second man appeared to try to prevent the assault, but after the victim had fallen both men fled the scene, running in the direction of Clifton Park."

The victim was treated for a minor injury to his face at Rotherham General Hospital.

Police are now appealing for information about the alleged attackers who are described as Asian men in their early 20s. Both were wearing dark clothing at the time of the incident.
