Hospital chief: We're still open for business

DON’T let concerns about Covid-19 prevent you from seeking medical attention - that's the message from Rotherham Hospital.

Rotherham’s medical director Dr Callum Gardner is urging people to still attend the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre as required.

“While most people are primarily concerned with coronavirus, it is important to remember that other illnesses and ailments can still require medical attention,” he said.

“As at any other time, many illnesses and injuries can be treated at home or with advice from local pharmacists.

“GPs are still available and you can also contact NHS 111 through their website or by phone for advice and support.

“For emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, it is vital that you get medical attention urgently and we urge everyone to act appropriately in such situations.

“You must not let worries or concerns about coronavirus prevent you from seeking medical attention.”

Dr Gardner said that while coronavirus was infectious to children, it was rarely serious.

“If your child is unwell it is more likely to be a non-coronavirus illness, rather than coronavirus itself,” he said.

“While it is extremely important to follow Government advice to stay at home during this period, remember that NHS 111, GPs and hospitals are still providing the same safe care as any other time.

“We encourage parents to continue to keep an eye out for signs or symptoms of any illnesses as they would normally do, and seek advice when needed.

“This includes the NHS website at www.nhs.uk, local pharmacies, GPs and NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.”
