Horse killed in Swinton roundabout accident

A FAMILY’S pet horse was knocked down and killed when it bolted across a roundabout after being spooked by a dog.

Rider Sam Daly (17) was on chestnut thoroughbred Sylvia on a path near Warren Vale, Swinton, last weekend (26).

The horse bolted after an Akita dog jumped up at her, was hit by a car at the Woodman roundabout and had to be put down.

Sam’s mum Jo thanked passers-by who stopped to take charge of the situation and help comfort her shaken daughter.

Jo said: “In particular, there was a woman with a young boy who got out of her car, stopped the traffic and helped Sam, who was traumatised.

“Luckily, Sam had dismounted safely or we could be having a very different conversation.

Sam, who had Sylvia since April and has had horses for six years, was out on a usual weekend ride with friend Vicky Melia on Saturday morning.

The driver and passengers were taken to hospital as a precaution but not injured.

“It’s a dreadful thing to have happened,” said Jo. “It was a very sad day for us because Sylvia was our pet.

“But we would still like to take the opportunity to thank those who helped the girls for what they did.”
