Homes cleared in gas cylinder blaze scare

AROUND 30 Conisborough residents were evacuated from their homes after a fire involving acetylene gas cylinders in a garage.

All occupants of Windsor Road were asked to leave their houses at around 11.15pm on Friday after the highly volatile gas cylinders were found within the blaze.

Crews from Edlington and Dearne fire stations found a sports car and welding equipment in the garage and evacuated the area immediately, cooling the cylinders using a water jet from a distance.

Residents who could not stay with friends were looked after at Conisborough Social Education Centre by Doncaster Council’s emergency planning team.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “Acetylene cylinders sometimes need to be cooled for 24 hours but after conducting safety tests on them at around 4am, firefighters deemed the area safe and allowed residents to return home.”

The fire is believed to have started accidentally.

Nobody was injured during the incident.
