Hand-cycle rider Liz Grundey rolls into the Guinness World Record books

Liz Grundey (59) completed the ride from Land’s End to John O’ Groats on her handcycle, accompanied by personal trainer and friend Hannah Wright.

The duo made the cross-country trip to raise over £1,000 for Dementia UK and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Liz has epilepsy, asthma, cerebral palsy and spondylosis — but the Bannatyne’s gym member does not let disability hold her back.

She powered along the iconic route in her electric-assisted hybrid handcycle, which attaches to the front of her wheelchair.

Last year, Liz and Hannah cycled one stage of the journey to get a feel for the challenge.

Liz said: “It’s incredible and very overwhelming that I’m able to say that, with Hannah’s help, I’ve been able to break a world record.

“I lost both my mum and father-in-law to dementia, so it was very important for me to raise awareness for two fantastic charities and the work that they do, while proving to myself that I am able to break my own boundaries and anything is possible.”

She added: “I would like to thank Hannah for her support throughout the journey.

“She was able to push me through some trying moments — such as being stuck in a bush — and remind me why I was doing the challenge in the first place.

“I would also like to thank my husband Michael as without his help driving the support vehicle, none of this would have been possible.”

Hannah is Liz’s personal trainer at Bannatyne’s Health Club, on Moorhead Way.

“Liz has shown a tremendous amount of passion for this challenge,” said Hannah.

“She has shown such dedication — in training at the health club and throughout the challenge itself — and it has been a pleasure to have been a part of her journey and watching her break a world record.”
