Gunshots fired on Mexborough street

THREE men have been arrested after gunshots were fired in a Mexborough street.

Shots were heard in the Frederick Street area yesterday at 6.10pm.

Specialist officers have established that a weapon was fired at the location and work to trace a vehicle believed to be involved in the incident was undertaken.

Yesterday evening, South Yorkshire Police worked with other forces as the vehicle travelled south.

At around 2.50am today, Hertfordshire Police stopped the vehicle and three men were arrested.

The men, aged 24, 26 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of firearm offences and are being held in custody in Hertfordshire, where South Yorkshire officers are travelling to interview them.

Det Insp Mark Monteiro said: “At this stage we have not received any information or found any evidence that anyone has been injured as a result of the incident.

“I understand this will be worrying for those living locally but I believe this was a targeted incident and do not consider there to be any wider danger to residents.

“To reassure members of the community we have increased the footprint of neighbourhood officers in the area and I would encourage anyone who was in the Frederick Street area yesterday evening and saw anything which could relate to this incident to contact police.”

Anyone with information should contact police on 101 quoting incident 771 from January 20 or email

Information can also be given, anonymously and in confidence, to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
